REAL Engineering
Blueprint

The structural drawing beneath the aspiration: how fundamental science is meant to become computation, computation to become engineering, and engineering to become service to society.

यथा बीजं तथा वृक्षः yathā bījaṃ tathā vṛkṣaḥ "As the seed, so the tree"

The Institute's aspiration is to become a research partner that organizations turn to when conventional solutions run out — providing end-to-end research the way leading engineering firms provide end-to-end engineering: from fundamental theory through computational modeling, prototyping, algorithm design, validation, software, publication, technology transfer, and consulting. This is an analogy of method, not of corporate form — the Institute remains, and is constituted to remain, a non-profit public charitable trust.

The seed is fundamental research. The tree — computational tools, engineering innovations, scientific software, and technology partnerships — grows from it, not instead of it. Fundamental research remains the foundation; engineering is the mechanism by which it reaches the world.

Research Pillars

Four Domains, One Institute

REAL Institute is conceived as a multidisciplinary umbrella rather than a single-discipline lab. These four pillars describe the breadth the Institute intends to sustain at once.

Evolution Roadmap

Four Stages, One Direction

The path from present-day scientific foundation to a global, multidisciplinary research organization, laid out as sequential stages rather than a fixed timetable.

This roadmap is an administrative elaboration adopted under the Trustees' standing authority to establish additional councils, institutes, and governance bodies as needed to fulfill the Trust's mission (Trust Deed, Clause 6.5). It does not itself amend the Constitutional Charter.
Future Research Services

What the Institute Intends to Offer

Capabilities REAL Institute intends to build over the coming decade, in service of universities, hospitals, startups, government laboratories, and industry.

Ten-Year Horizon

Twelve Intended Capabilities

None of these are claimed as present-day offerings — they are the services the Institute is building toward, spanning computation, biomedicine, quantum information, and the translation of research into use.

The list is deliberately broad. A multidisciplinary umbrella organization is meant to be approached with problems that don't fit neatly into one department, and the services below are the Institute's answer to that kind of request.

Any income these services generate is applied solely toward the Institute's own charitable Objects, never distributed to Trustees or private individuals — consistent with its status as a non-profit public charitable trust.

Guiding Principles

What Governs the Build

The values meant to constrain and orient every stage of the roadmap above, so that growth in scale does not come at the cost of rigor. These operate within, and do not replace or amend, the Institute's own Values and Constitutional Principles as set out in its Trust Deed.

Our Destination

Not Another Engineering Services Company

The destination is not merely to become another engineering services company. Instead, the Institute seeks to mature into a research-driven organization whose discoveries naturally give rise to advanced computational tools, engineering innovations, scientific software, and technology partnerships — consistent with the Trust Deed's own Immutable Principles of Charitable Purpose and Non-Profit Character (Clauses 4.1, 4.5).

Fundamental research remains the Institute's foundation, while engineering solutions become the mechanism through which that research benefits society — a distributed network of researchers, engineers, physicians, scientists, software developers, and students, collaborating across continents toward the same end.
