Much of the inspiration behind the present volume comes from Sri Aurobindo and Paramahamsa Yogananda, whose chapter, An Experience in Cosmic Consciousness, has long motivated the present author. As a scientific topic, a subset of neuroscience, consciousness has been looked at in detail by the modern neuroscientists around the world. Authors such as Koch, Tononi, Crick and Dennett have contributed much to a systematization of the scientific effort in this direction. We are grateful for all their work and the advancement that they have wrought in man's understanding of this abstruse topic. Another modern development which demands similar commitment to its study is quantum mechanics. The gulf between quantum considerations and the classical world is so vast, that very few are able to successfully traverse the chasm. Many fall into it and some are rescued by their scientific colleagues. We draw inspiration from the quantum physicists in this book. They forged boldly ahead, regardless of possible errors and missteps, when there was darkness all around. Thanks to them, the classical world is not the only world known to man today. Any author is successful if his reader finds a gem or two in his book, that would advance the reader's understanding on the topic under discussion. If the present volume is able to do so for even a handful of readers, the author's efforts would have been meaningful. Finally, it must be mentioned, that India has long specialized in consciousness - just take the Upanishads for example. So it is apt that the present volume is being composed in India. Once again, the author expresses a feeling of fulfilment and thanks those who have made his stay in India very productive thus far. Thanks to Sankara, and Brahma.
